One of the most loved features of the iPhone 12, 13, 14, and 15 models is MagSafe. The wireless charging system allows you to easily connect accessories like wallets and chargers to your iPhone for fast & efficient charging via a magnetic ring. But this technology is exclusive to Apple, which begs the question: does the Samsung Galaxy S23 have anything like MagSafe?
Is there a MagSafe for Samsung Galaxy phones?
There is no MagSafe charging for Samsung Galaxy phones, as the proprietary charging system is only found in iPhones, MacBooks, and AirPods. The wireless charging solution for your Samsung Galaxy 23 is a Qi-certified charger (the same goes for most Google Pixel models). However, the Google Pixel 5 & Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 are MagSafe-compatible.
We decided that wasn’t good enough, and wanted more people to have access to this technology. So we built MagSafe-compatible magnets directly into our Galaxy S23 Ultra and S23 Plus cases, immediately giving Android users access to a once exclusive charging system.
We designed our injection molds to allow for a thin magnet to be placed into the case and hidden behind the wood/resin inlay. We also understand that not every Galaxy owner might want a magnet included in their case, so we made it optional. Unfortunately we weren't able to get this ring embedded into the base Galaxy S23 cases (due to the camera placement), just the Plus and Ultra, and the modern iPhone cases.
Update: The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) announced that an updated version of Qi, aptly named Qi2, would be finalized later in 2023. It’s based on the MagSafe technology.
Wireless Charging: MagSafe vs. Qi
Functionally, MagSafe & Qi chargers work the same way, both powered by electromagnetism. The major difference between the two is that compatible iPhones have an additional ring of magnets around the base Qi wireless charger, snapping into place for a faster, more secure charging connection. For reference, MagSafe chargers can reach up to 15W, compared to Qi chargers which max out at just 7.5W.
